The Magic Tropics Wonderisland (2016) project presents tourism as a staged play. Set in Waikiki, the play derives its script from the tourism industry's marketing campaigns and from depictions of Hawaiian exoticism in popular culture. Tourists strive to perform according to this script: they wear tropical "costumes", record manifestations of island life, and partake in activities that are popularly deemed "Hawaiian". To monitor and improve their performance, tourists receive support from directors and stage crew—that is, tour guides, attraction staff etc.
